Chapter Four
âWhere are we going now?â Darcy asked.
âTo the future,â Cupid said. âI will show you a glimpse of the life you are currently weaving.â
âI donât understand.â
âYou have heard of the Moirai who determine a manâs life â its measure and its end.â
âYes, like a thread.â Darcy was not an expert on Greek mythology, but he had read about the goddesses of fate.
Cupid said, âA better explanation is that a manâs life is like threads on a loom. Each of you chooses which threads to add or to ignore â by the choices you make â and ultimately, a man creates either a masterful tapestry or an ugly jumble. It is your choice.â
âBut we are born in different situations with different capabilities and opportunities.â
âDifferent looms,â Cupid said simply. âAnd you have been blessed with a magnificent loom. You have fortune, education and health. Your parents loved you and you have good friends. But what are you creating with your loom?â
âI donât know,â Darcy said honestly.
âCome then,â Cupid said.
They flew back over London and entered Darcy House. Darcy saw another version of himself â older now, with grey hair at his temples. He sat at the desk in his study, reviewing his account books. There was a timid knock at the door.
âCome in,â Older Darcy said, and two children tumbled inside â a girl about six years of age, and a boy about four.
Older Darcy opened his arms wide. âCharles, Anne,â he said, and they ran to him, to hug him. He held them close for a moment, kissed their cheeks and ruffled their hair. âHow are you today? Have you done your lessons?â
Darcy was intrigued by his future children.
âNanny has a cold,â Anne announced. âSo we stayed inside.â
Charles made a face. âReading books.â
âDo not worry,â Older Darcy said. âYou will be reading soon.â
Charles said, âI would much rather go for a ride.â
Older Darcy glanced outside the window. âI donât think the weather is good enough for that.â
Anne said, âWe could play hide and seek. Would you join us, Papa?â
âI will,â Older Darcy said. He covered his eyes with his hands and said, âGo hide yourselves, while I count. One. Two. â¦â
The children, his children, squealed and ran from the room.
Darcy spoke to Cupid. âThey seem like very nice children.â
Cupid nodded. âThey are.â
Suddenly there was a voice in the hallway. âMr. Darcy!â a shrill female called out.
Older Darcy stiffened and Darcy looked at the door, wondering who this could be. She didnât sound anything like any of his relations.
And then Miss Bingley was in the doorway, with a sour, angry look on her face. She was older than Darcy remembered. She was heavy set now and dressed in a fussy, ornate gown. Her hair, which had been a light brown before, was now a brassy blonde with rows of false curls in front of her ears, like pale sausages that trembled as she walked.
Older Darcy sighed. âWhat is it, Mrs. Darcy?â
âNo!â Darcy cried. âAbsolutely not. Donât tell me I am married to that woman.
